Despite his regrets, he still wonders what she’s doing tonight, and longs for her presence in his life. He realizes that his actions may have hurt her, and that he could’ve done more to show her how much he cared for her. In the final verse, the man recognizes the value of having a friend who will always be there, whether he or she is right or wrong. He wonders once again what she’s doing tonight, as he feels the pain of losing her as a friend. He believes that a true friend would not give up on their friendship and walk away without explanation. He tries to console himself by saying that he didn’t really lose her, because they were never together in the first place. In the second verse, the man reflects on how they should have been closer, but he didn’t know how to express his feelings. He wonders what she’s doing tonight, and feels sad about not having her in his life. He realizes now that his honesty and desire to be her friend led her to doubt him and put her on edge. However, he didn’t have the courage to tell her, and ended up saying that he just wanted to be her friend. The song starts off with the man thinking about how if he had confessed his love, she would have stayed longer.
